The Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) software is being redesigned and restructured. To introduce the user community of modelers/programmers to the newly redesigned software, the University of British Columbia is offering a short course on the programming/code underlying EwE. This course differs considerably from usual EwE Workshops, which usually focus on data and parameterization for running models built using the EwE software.

This programming course content will focus on the algorithms and programming structure of the code underlying EwE and training users to use the new structure and dynamic libraries to create their own modules and functionalities for the EwE software using Microsoft Visual Studio.

This first EwE programming course will be held in Annapolis, Maryland and is sponsored by the Chesapeake Community Modeling Program, the Lenfest Ocean Program, the Chesapeake Research Consortium, the Sea Around Us Project, and the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office.

Location & Directions

The 2006 EwE Programming Course will be held at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD. A short drive from Annapolis, SERC is the world's leading research center for environmental studies of the coastal zone. The course will be held in the Schmidt Center, SERC's on-campus conference and meeting facility.

If you are visiting SERC from afar, Baltimore Washington Internatinal Airport is the closest airport at about 35 miles from SERC. National Airport is also not far from SERC at about 35 miles.

Lodging

NOTICE: Friday, July 28 is the final day to be eligable for the $104 rate at the Historic Inns of Annapolis.

The Historic Inns of Annapolis is the official hotel of the EwE Programming Course. Located in the heart of downtown Annapolis, the reduced rate of $104/night (plus tax) is a great bargain. If you are a federal employee, be sure to bring official documentation to ensure tax exemption.

Modeling Software

The new version of the EwE software runs on Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. The Express Version of this program can be downloaded for free here. This version will need to be installed on your machine so that you can make changes and compile the code necessary for EwE.
